5 COACHING TIPS TO HELP YOUR TALENT

MIND THE BASICS:

Stay away from useless, extra words that don’t add substance to your break. Words/phrases like: “Hope you’re having a great day”, “more great music on the way”, “I’m___ on your radio”. Those phrases don’t hold substance and are of no use to the listener. Also, be mindful of redundancies, for instance, don’t say “this evening at 7pm”, say, “this evening at 7” or just say “7 pm”.  If your talk break doesn’t benefit the listener or has extra useless words or phrases, rethink them.

DON’T BE A RADIO ANNOUNCER:

Be authentic, be the real person you are. Communicate in your own words, it will be more believable to the listener. Personalize your language, for example, “I’m taking my family to the festival this weekend, hopefully, I can meet you there”. A break that connects your personality/lifestyle with the listener. Additionally, show vulnerability, listeners love to know that your life is similar to theirs.

AIR-CHECK FREQUENTLY:

Record your show regularly and listen to yourself. Listen objectively to yourself and look for ways to improve. Go online and consume air-checks from other talents. Ask yourself, “If I was competing against myself, how would I exploit my weaknesses” and fix those things.

BE INTERESTING:

Interesting comes in a variety of styles; informational, funny, thought-provoking, emotional, etc. It will make you more likable, easier to listen to, and less predictable. Radio has the unique opportunity that music streaming services can’t provide, personality . . . use your personality!

INFLECTION IS THE KEY:

As you know, in Radio, you don’t get the opportunity to show facial expressions or show hand movements when communicating. Therefore, you have to display emotion through inflection. Sincerity when communicating a sad story, a big smile when you’re telling a funny story, slow and deliberate when sharing vital information. Your delivery should adjust throughout your show depending on the content you are sharing. Monotonous delivery is “Kryptonite” to a great talent.
